The Thursday Jazz Radio Show

February 25, 2o16 Jazz @ Noon every Thursday (starts at 12:07 after the satellite news) Host MARK WEBER KUNM Albuquerque, USA 89.9 FM (Mountain Standard Time) also streaming on the web KUNM.org Current time zone offset: UTC*/GMT -6 hours (*Coordinated Universal Time)/Greenwich Mean Time)

THE IS OF IS NOW

I have nothing to say and I am saying it — I have nothing to write really for this page today
and so I take John Cage’s declaration out for a spin.
I could, I suppose, say something about the disk jockey thing.
Radio hosts of my sort are advocates for the artists, it’s a way to get out of yourself
and focus on someone else’s work — (AA advises this very thing, as do the Buddhists).
I’m proud of my ability to listen, and it’s a privilege to be able to represent this jazz music
and that’s all I’ve got to say.
As well, all the work that goes into keeping a radio station afloat should not be taken lightly. Nor do we take frivolous the listener’s time. I hope the listening is meaningful.

and so, in the middle of
all that, you could spawn, or spin-out,
or jump ship, nobody’ll notice, as
long as yr quick, sure-footed, sugar-
    coated, salmon-protected, smart phone
in hand, never far from a pizza ceremony, (have the
slice in left hand before you salute), subway rumbling
at 90mph while a drunk entertains the
tribe holding aloft a decapitated horned beast head,
a bag of Skittles falls out of his pocket, yells some-
thing in what sounds like proto-Indo-European, falters when
the train brakes, I keep my bag of vinyl close,
my precious records from a bygone age
    when turntables ruled the earth

Mark! Imagine my surprise! I was just about to leave a reply when I saw your poem – I love it! Ever since your posts on the other thread I’ve been thinking about this subject. What you just created makes me say – you give the rapping free stylers (who I have a great respect for) a run for their money! And that’s all I have to say…..except thank you for this and for your expressions in writing and radio on behalf of artists!
