You need something more directly meaningful:
You need something tangible, sometimes
mere intelligence isn’t enough, we need good people
to teach us, people with boundless spirit ——
As well, we can learn from bad moves: We see
someone muck things up and we make note not
to step in that mess ourselves ——
A good teacher knows there are no absolutes ——
The title of a poem is not the poem,
in the same way the handle of a bucket is not
the bucket: A bucket holds water, the title
of a poem is the handle ——
In the same way the teacher is not the teachings:
The teacher points the way

Freddie Hill, Harold Land, Martin Banks —- May 10, 1981 — Los Angeles — photo by Mark Weber — Freddie and Martin were trumpet players, Freddie had a smokin’ bop sextet with trombonist Lou Blackburn that included Horace Tapscott that made a couple albums in 1963 (we’ll spin some of it on the airwaves) —- Martin made records with everyone from Dexter to Sun Ra — this photo always reminds me of how my colleague Kirk Silsbee personified Harold as “the Dapper Buddhist”

Dave Frishberg at KPFK live broadcast from Studio A on John Breckow’s all-night jazz radio show — May 27, 1979 — photo by Mark Weber — Dave lived in Los Angeles (presumably in the Valley?) 1971-1986 (currently resides up the coast in Portland) —- this night after an evening of Prez Conference at Donte’s we popped in at KPFK (drive down Lankershim hang a left into Cahuenga Pass) and there’s Dave Frishberg telling great stories about his days with Al & Zoot —- He had his home-grown rolled in peculiar papers that were 5-inches long (remember Zig-Zags were something like 3) he called this crop “Van Nuys Silver”

1) Charles Owens just played in Joplin, Missouri, last Saturday night with a Bobby Shew Quintet performing music from Miles and Coltrane —– band consisted of Cal Haines, drums; Jim Ahrend, piano; Colin Deuble, bass
2) In the photo of Charles Owens & Jerome you can see Red Holloway behind them
3) Tommy Tedesco Quintet that night was: Tony Morillo, drums; Jon Kurnick, guitar; Paul Capritto, bass; Emil Richards, vibraphone; and Tommy on guitar & hat
Wow – wonderful!
That Tim Berne gig was at the Cathay De Grande in the first few months they had shows there. It became a legendary punk rock den of iniquity. My friend Phast Phreddie was a DJ there and he booked the show: Tim Berne & Alberan.

I think I actually have prints of photos you gave me of that gig somewhere still!
And I may have misspelled Lou’s name. I think it’s actually Lew – not Lou – Camarata or Camerata or Camaratta or ??
Anyway, I distinctly recall that it was a Sunday night and that there was a nice amount of water soaked into the carpeting because dudes at the previous night’s punk show had ripped the latrines out of the wall or something. When we arrived and walked downstairs it was squish squish squish!

4) Aztec drummer with feathers on stage with Philly Joe was with the group Esplendor Azteca that day
5) A few months ago I asked Bobby Bradford when and where did the backbeat (strong accents on the 2 & 4) come into prominence. He said we’d have to dig into the records to track that down. You certainly wouldn’t be far off the track if you started with Earl Palmer who’s work in the 50s with Little Richard, Dave Bartholomew, et el. in New Orleans would be a good starting point for investigation — Earl was always a jazz drummer, but for the early proto-rock and R&B he distilled things, obviously part of a continuum

Zutty Singleton told me one evening (1954) at Jimmy Ryan’s
on 52nd St. (we were working there with Danny Barker’s
quintet) that he had invented that way of playing time, with
the hihat on 2 and 4. Danny Barker only allowed the bass to
play four to the bar when he said you could, otherwise it was
strictly two beats to the bar. and that left the drum to fill in on
2 and 4.
