Untitled Poem

Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, alto; Leo Blevins, guitar; Bobby Blevins, organ; unknown trombonist — Rubaiyat Room, 1400 S. Western Avenue, Los Angeles March 5, 1977 | Photo by Mark Weber

You’d be coming from someplace
and going to another
criss-crossing the giant city
always at night
always with lights, neon and incandescent
headlights of the freeways
street lamps
the little light over the bartender
Cleanhead said to the waitress “Did you put
your finger in it, baby?” as she handed him
his little drink
in those days I always had a double

Cleanhead and the Blevins Brothers had that
Sunday night gig for several years
just a click north of the Santa Monica Freeway
on Western Avenue

a little stop along the way . . . .

    Simple, yet profound

I’ve always felt that jazz happens at night because, instead of sharing the “space ways” with everyone’s waking egos, we are instead flying with everyone’s dreams…

Mark, thanks again for following your muse…

Note: that Leo Blevins not only made a gang of records with Gene Ammons but he’s also the guitarist on the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Live at the Beehive, Chicago, recordings.
