Hey Tom, Love that circa ’97 picture, captures the essence for sure! You’ve always
reminded me so much of that actor Leland Orser, in both physical appearance and
also personality. Do you know him? He’s a very successful character actor who’s
been in just about everything, married to Jean Tripplehorn, another favorite. Can you
    tell I’m still a movie-buff??

Hope you and your family are all well and making lots of ART in the world

Hoping to visit NM sometime in 2013.

    Best wishes,

    Lisa Towles

Mark here are the two listings of collaborations I did with Tom Guralnick and then I’ll tell you what I know about the Samurai Dog Biscuit event with him at the Batch.

Larry Goodell and Friends, Performance Poetry with Songs, Jazz and Dance, February 16, 1991. Reagan Is collaboration with dancer Licia Perea. Breakdown collaboration with bass player Zimbabwe. Pegasus of Love collaboration with Perea. Seven Sonnets collaboration with Tom Guralnick, sax, and Zimbabwe, bass. Outpost Performance Space, Albuquerque.

Larry Goodell & Friends, Performance Poetry with Songs and Jazz, premieres of Jazz Backwards, a collaboration with Tom Guralnick, on saxophone; Stew In Your Own Juice, Rat Song, Hullabaloo, & Ozone Is My Canary, new songs; Outpost Performance Space, Albuquerque, October 25, 1991.

I’m amazed I don’t have the flyer or any information about when Tom and I collaborated on Samurai Dog Biscuits. He had just got an electronic Yamaha clarinet-alto-sax-like instrument. So he took various Dog Biscuits (fragments, the whole thing was 1000 fragments that can be shuffled up & read) and played them in distortions and different pitch levels & improvisations and alternated with me reading various “Biscuits.”

I have the tape of the performance which at one time I believe I sent to you (?) and it’s a cassette recording of our collaboration.

I will try to locate the flyer from Nicole Blaisdell (who has the collection of Batch flyers I kept under the front desk) which wd nail down the date of the Samurai Dog Biscuit collaboration. We had great fun rehearsing it and doing it at the Batch. Probably late 80’s. Early 90’s.

Samurai Dog Biscuits is accessible in its entirety to read here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/36875460/Samurai-Dog-Biscuits

and my very recent improvs on pages from the work can be heard here: http://duende.bandcamp.com/album/samurai-dog-biscuits

When I can get to my tapes I’ll try to make what’s left on them available somewhere!

thanks Mark and I’m happy you’re doing this TG project,

    TWO THINGS

    1) Larry refers to “the Batch” which was one of Albuquerque’s great independent bookstores (the late Gus Blaisdell’s operation)(JB Bryan and Larry worked there for years) at 106 Cornell SE, a hot spot, just a burrito away from Frontier Restaurant on Central — formally called The Living Batch, which was a phrase Gus borrowed from an Ed Dorn poem.

    2) Larry says “Samari Dog Biscuits” length was about ten minutes — performed only once, and that was at the Living Batch. (We’re still hoping a recording comes to light.)

  4. Mark Weber

subsequent to these last 2 Comments I have found a CDR copy of “Samari Dog Biscuits” and the entry at 1992 has been emended

  5. Tom Guralnick

I believe I got the WX7 wind controller around that time… did another concert with Christian Marclay at The Batch around that time as well (May 1989). I used the wind controller to trigger samples of my mute unit and prepared saxophone vocabulary. It had a lot of potential but I never took it to a point where I was totally comfortable with it nor where I felt it could replace the Mute Unit and the physicality of that experience. But that was certainly a thought because travelling with all those pieces of the unit (3 large cases) was becoming unwieldy (and not that much fun)
