So, I had this dream. Normally my dreams are just that: embarrassingly normal. They’re almost re-runs of Father Knows Best. My daily life is weirder than my dreams. Which begs the question: Maybe my dreams are my “real” life and vice versa? But, every once in a while I get a doozie, like the one where I was climbing a multi-colored rope up to the clouds, or the one where I was a hoplite (soldier) in the Peloponnesian War (not sure what side I was on, or if it matters, Sparta or Athens). Those kind of dreams that Freud can sink his teeth into (although, I’d turn a hose on Sigmund, run him and his clipboard off, but that’s a subject for another time).

So, this dream last night involves one of our local jazz clubs, the Outpost Performance Space. There’s a smattering of us there in the afternoon for a pre-concert workshop. The alto saxophonist David Sanborn has played a non-diatonic very interesting piece on the piano, then says, “Now, here’s what it sounds like on sax.” He plays but misses all the interesting notes. It’s a tonal piece so there’s certain notes that don’t fit, those are my favorite notes (what the late Peter Ecklund called Diatonic Avoidance Music – my kind! Peter was a cornetist and devotee of hot jazz). I was confused because I heard no relation between the piano thing and what he played on the alto, but the audience heard it and applauded profusely. Then, David morphed into Ray Anderson (David Sanborn has never played Outpost; Ray Anderson many times) and Ray has the alto strapped on and says, “Okay, now for something different,” and he attaches the slide part of his trombone onto the alto and although the dream isn’t so weird that he has three arms he is never-the-less fingering the saxophone while also manipulating the slide playing “Tiger Rag.” What does it mean? Obviously, (see, you don’t need that egghead Freud to figure these things out) I’m lamenting the cancellation of all upcoming concerts at our beloved Outpost and subconsciously worried there will never be live jazz again due to coronavirus contagion. God save us.

When I saw the flyer for Sheila and Harvie it hit me that you must be the most organized person ever. Flyers don’t usually have years on them (as this one doesn’t) but you always know your dates. Bravo. (I would have been able tell you that TranceFormation date at The Stone, but only because it’s printed inside the CD packet.)

  2. Mark Weber

Dear dear Andrea, thanks for making Comment. I get so little feedback on these pages, one has wonder . . . . Well, as to figuring out dates on old posters: there are only 14 iterations of the Gregorian Calendar, so you can pretty much suss it out. On your other point, being organized can be a curse. Or, worse, people think I have OCD (I don’t). I’m as much a writer as I am a historian and I understand things better when I can see the TimeLine. On yet another point, do you remember when you had to correct me when I had mistakenly called the trio TransFormation? I still laugh over that one. Silly me. Okay, we just got out of the mountains — nice long hike —- And guess what was on our porch when we pulled up in the driveway? A big box from Zabars! Yaahoo. I was both hoping and dreading that it was full of Rugelach, and well, the Gods are looking out for me because I have no resistance to Not eating Zabars pastries, but this box from Janet’s sisters on 113th Street was a pastrami/corned beef sandwich airdrop. . . . . So . . . .

That’s okay – even Connie wrote “Transformation” and I had to reminder HER it was TranceFormation!
To answer your other comment about recordings — we made only one: TranceFormation in Concert, with tracks from the above-mentioned gig at The Stone and from Korzo (Brooklyn) Feb. 2, 2010. Of course we probably had rehearsal recordings…as you know, Connie recorded everything.
