YOU CAN HEAR THE LISTENER LISTENING

The ideal listener
Is someone who is calm and relaxed
Reflective
Maybe with time on their hands
Knows how to listen
Practices forbearance

Maybe the early flush of discovery
and newness is a thing of the past, be it
the dominion of the young, you
are never-the-less settled into quiet repose
Sitting by the window
This is not the complacency of those that
                         chew the cud
This is quiet pleasure, what we call
Enjoyment
Simple and easy

Here’s a memory: Horace Tapscott grew up in the era when radio was big stuff, everybody listen’d to the radio in the 40s and 50s through to the end of the 20th century till now when only those of us that lived back then still listen to what they now call “terrestrial radio” ————-SO, when I got this slot on KUNM Horace was all into it, and kept telling me for my theme I should use “Flight 17” which I wasn’t against, but this track took up the entire side of an LP (almost 16 minutes!) so I mulled that around, I think I even used it, once, but Horace knew that radio themes had to be short & snappy, so he must have had an idea in his head what part of this Herbert Baker composition was this Theme ————I should have taken him into the studio and had him record his idea ————- too bad I didnt
